The Research Institute on Contemporary Southeast Asia (IRASEC) invites applications for its ASEAN Doctoral Field Research Grant. This new grant is open to candidates of all ASEAN nationalities who are currently enrolled in a doctoral program at a university within the ASEAN region and pursuing research on contemporary Southeast Asia.

This new grant is open to candidates of all ASEAN nationalities who are currently enrolled in a doctoral program at a university within the ASEAN region and pursuing research on contemporary Southeast Asia.

The grant is intended to support original fieldwork addressing one of the following research themes in one or more ASEAN member States :

Children's Rights
Religious Soft Power
Public Policy on Artificial Intelligence

Proposals must demonstrate an innovative perspective and rely on the collection of first-hand empirical data.

The selection, evaluation of applications, and designation of the awardee will be undertaken by the IRASEC Research Council, which has full authority in this matter. The grant consists of a lump sum of €2,000 (Two Thousand Euros), disbursed in a single installment upon signature of the agreement.

The awardee will be required to submit a Working Paper within six months of completing fieldwork. Subject to acceptance and potential academic editing, this paper will be published in IRASEC's “Occasional Papers” series (long format) or “Discussion Papers” series (average format), available on its website. The Working Paper must constitute a genuine piece of scholarly research, rather than a mere field report.

The grantee will be recognized as an Associated PhD Fellow of IRASEC for a period of two years. During this time, the awardee may, if desired, be hosted at IRASEC's headquarters in Bangkok and participate in the institute's academic activities.

Application Timeline (2025/2026) :

10 December 2025 : Submission of applications.
15 December 2025 : Notification of results, following evaluation and ranking of applications by the IRASEC Scientific Research Council. The grant agreement will subsequently be signed, and the grant disbursed before the end of 2025.
Fieldwork must be conducted between 20 December 2025 and 31 August 2026.

A project description (maximum 5 pages ; 2,500–3,000 words), including a literature review, research plan, and concise bibliography.
Proof of doctoral enrollment (student identification card or official enrollment certificate).
Soft copies of max. 3 recent and significant publications (if applicable)
Letters of recommendation will not be considered

Postdoctoral Fieldwork Research Grant in Singapore (in collaboration with the Institut français de Singapour)

IRASEC and the Institut français de Singapour are offering a postdoctoral fellowship in the Humanities and Social Sciences, dedicated to field research in Singapore.

This fellowship is open to researchers of all nationalities who have obtained a PhD in the Humanities and Social Sciences from a French or European university after December 1, 2020. The main objective of this initiative is to support projects that offers an original and innovative perspective on the city-state of Singapore. Comparative approaches with other countries are welcome.

IRASEC and the Institut français de Singapour are offering a postdoctoral fellowship in the Humanities and Social Sciences, dedicated to field research in Singapore.

Applicants for this fellowship must conduct their fieldwork in Singapore between December 15, 2025, and December 31, 2026, as part of a clearly defined research project. The fellowship includes a lump-sum grant of €3,000, paid in a single installment upon signing the contract with the successful candidate. This grant is intended to cover travel and living expenses. Having access to additional funding is considered an advantage.
The selection and evaluation of applications, as well as the designation of the successful candidate, are the sole responsibility of IRASEC's Laboratory Council, which has full authority in this matter.
The selected fellow commits to submitting a research paper within six months after the completion of the fieldwork. Following acceptance and scientific editing, this paper will be published on the IRASEC website, under the heading ‘Discussion Papers' (for shorter versions) or ‘Occasional Papers' (for longer versions). This paper is not a field report but a genuine piece of research, contributing to the fellow's academic development.
Fellows will automatically become associate postdoctoral researchers at IRASEC for a period of two years. If they wish, they may participate in the laboratory's activities.

Application Timeline for 2025/2026

November 15, 2025 : Deadline for receiving applications (see required documents below).
December 1, 2025 : After ranking by IRASEC's Laboratory Council, results will be announced to all applicants. The fellowship agreement will be signed and the grant disbursed before the end of 2025.

Application File

The application must include :

A research project (between 1,500 and 2,000 words) including a literature review, theoretical and methodological framework, the planned stages of the fieldwork, and institutional partners relevant to the research in Singapore.
A signed motivation letter explaining the reasons for conducting research in Singapore, the originality of the proposed work (including how it relates to the applicant's previous PhD research and what new perspective it brings), the academic connections to be established, and relevant local research partners.
A CV (max. 2 pages), accompanied by a list of up to three publications.
A copy of the PhD diploma in the Humanities and Social Sciences from a French or European university.

Letters of recommendation will not be considered.

L'IRASEC met au concours deux bourses d'aide à la recherche sur le terrain. Ces bourses s'adressent à des personnes de toutes nationalités, inscrites en doctorat dans une université française et poursuivant des recherches sur l'Asie du Sud-Est contemporaine. Elles sont destinées à mener des enquêtes de terrain sur la thématique de la thèse. Les problématiques doivent apporter une perspective originale et novatrice sur l'Asie du Sud-Est, relevant des champs disciplinaires couverts par les activités de recherche de l'IRASEC (voir les axes de recherche).

La sélection et l'examen des candidatures ainsi que la désignation des lauréats ou lauréates sont de la responsabilité du Conseil de laboratoire, souverain en la matière. Chaque bourse comprend une allocation forfaitaire de 3 000 euros payable en un versement unique à la signature du contrat. Disposer d'un financement complémentaire est un avantage pour la candidature.

Le boursier s'engage à soumettre dans les six mois après son terrain une note de recherche. Celle-ci sera, après acceptation et un éventuel travail d'édition scientifique, publiée sur le site de l'IRASEC dans la rubrique « Notes de l'IRASEC » (version courte) ou « Carnets de l'IRASEC » (version longue). Ce texte n'est pas un rapport de terrain, mais un véritable travail de recherche, destiné à contribuer à la formation du boursier.

Les boursiers deviennent de facto doctorants/postdoctorants associés à l'IRASEC pendant deux ans. Ils peuvent, s'ils le souhaitent, être accueillis dans les locaux de l'IRASEC à Bangkok et participer aux activités du laboratoire.

Calendrier des candidatures 2025/2026 :

15 novembre 2025 : réception des dossiers de candidature (voir détails ci-dessous).
30 novembre : après classement des dossiers par le Conseil de laboratoire de l'IRASEC, les résultats seront annoncés à tous les candidats. Suivront la signature de la convention et le versement de la bourse avant la fin de l'année 2025.

Scholarship for Academics and Researchers: Sejours Scientifiques De Haut Niveau (SSHN)

The Embassy of France to the Philippines and Micronesia implements the French Government Scholarship Programme « France Excellence » among which are the « Séjours Scientifiques de Haut Niveau (SSHN) ». Addressed to academic and research staff wishing to spend some time in a higher education or research institution in France, the SSHN also aim to be a tool to increase the cooperation with French institutions. Between 2023 and 2025, 26 Filipino researchers received this grant for a 2 to 4 weeks mobility in France.

The scholarship includes a roundtrip air ticket, a monthly allowance (young researcher : 425 euros/week ; senior researcher : 500 euros/week), health and repatriation insurance, and the visa fees. Campus France (Paris office) is operating the mobility including accommodation when requested.

Nationality : any candidate with a tenure position in a public or private higher education institution or scientific research laboratory in Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Palau, or the Philippines and holder of one of these four nationalities is eligible. Please note that binational candidates holding the nationality of one of the countries of the European Union are not eligible.

Degree : only holders of PhD degrees are eligible. According to the programme rules, candidates who have obtained a doctorate for more than 5 years will be considered "confirmed researchers". Candidates who have obtained a doctorate within the last 5 years, are considered "young researchers".

Length of mobility : from 2 weeks (14 days) to 4 weeks (28 days). Longer stay may be considered if a consistent proof of co-financing is included in the application.

Dates of mobility : in 2026, only mobilities scheduled between the 15th of March and ending at the latest on the 1st of December will be eligible.

Each year, IRASEC awards two fellowships to support field research. These scholarships are intended for doctoral students from France or abroad (registered in a French university) pursuing research on contemporary Southeast Asia. They are intended to conduct field studies on the theme of the doctorate, to deepen research already undertaken in thesis or to start a new post-doctoral field.
