Maxime GHAZARIAN

Maxime Ghazarian is a PhD candidate in Contemporary History at Montpellier University Paul-Valéry, affiliated with the CRISES research center, and currently based in Hanoi, working at the intersection of European studies, Vietnamese studies, and Cold War history. His dissertation, supervised by Prof. Pierre Journoud, examines how the European Community constructed - and repeatedly reconfigured - its relationship with Việt Nam between 1973 and 1996, treating Việt Nam as a revealing “laboratory” for European external action amid institutional rivalries and shifting geopolitics.
Grounded in intensive, multi-sited fieldwork, he combines European and Vietnamese perspectives through archival research and interviews across Việt Nam and Europe. His research has been supported by fieldwork grants from the École française d’Extrême-Orient (EFEO) and the Fondation Pierre Ledoux – Jeunesse Internationale.
He has published on Euro-Vietnamese and Franco-Vietnamese relations, as well as on humanitarian and migration issues during the Cold War, and regularly shares his research outputs and conference presentations.
