ASEAN Doctoral Field Research Grant 2025/2026 Awardee
Born in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia, I completed my Bachelor’s (2016–2019) and Master’s degrees (2020–2021) in Chinese Studies at Xiamen University Malaysia. I subsequently served as a research fellow at the Centre for Research on Southeast Asian Chinese Documents (2022–2023), where I collaborated with the research team and published several journal articles in Religions and Histories (MDPI), focusing on the Chinese diaspora, Chinese temples in Southeast Asia, and Chinese popular religions.
I am currently a PhD candidate in Chinese Studies at the National University of Singapore under the supervision of Prof. Kenneth Dean, broadening my research to include social network analysis in the Southeast Asia region. My dissertation examines the political economy of Malacca during the British colonial period, focusing on institutions, culture, and the role of Chinese business elites (1820s–1920s). Recent independent publications include “The Connection of Penang Local-Born Chinese Families with Modern China” and “The Social Functions and Network of the Goh Loo Club in Pre-War Singapore.”
