Influence of personality and parenting style in problematic Internet use in adolescence: Study in Indonesia and France

Abstract
The number of teenagers who use the Internet is increasing rapidly in most countries over the past two decades, with negative consequences on their quality of life and academic activities. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that play a role in triggering the emergence of Internet Addiction in adolescents. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the relationship between adolescent personality, parenting style, and Internet Addiction. Afterwards, a long-term longitudinal study with intervals of approximately one year was conducted. The aim was to ascertain whether personality and parenting style predict an increase or decrease in the severity of adolescent Internet Addiction over time. The study was conducted in Indonesia and France in middle school students aged 11-16 years. Data collection was carried out at the schools twice in 2018 and 2019. Participants answered a series of questionnaires (particularly : Internet Addiction, parenting style, personality and quality of life). The results showed that neuroticism was positively related to Internet Addiction, whereas conscientiousness was negatively related to Internet Addiction. The neuroticism factor predicts an increase in the severity of Internet Addiction over time, while the conscientiousness factor predicts a decrease in the severity of Internet Addiction as the subject gets older. Furthermore, parental permissive and authoritarian are positively related to Internet Addiction in adolescents, although they cannot predict the increase and decrease in the severity of Internet Addiction over time. We suggest some reflections on the practical implications of these results.
