Abstract
Given the absence of preliminary research in social psychology on the topics of transactional and representational phenomena among emergency personnel in Cambodia, we suggest an exploratory study and an initial Franco-Cambodian comparison. Our study aims to use a combined approach in social psychology to explore transactional phenomena as well as the representation of the profession among these professionals at the intra and intercultural level. This study was conducted in two stages. First, we used a qualitative method in order to explore the two phenomena studied with a sample of 48 emergency personnel. It consists of 20 civilian firefighters and 15 SAMU personnel for Cambodia, and 13 French firefighters. The second step is based on the quantitative method aiming at verifying with qualitative results as well as establishing the cross-connection linking representational and transactional approaches. It is the comparative study among 196 subjects at four levels (intrapsychic, interpersonal, positional and intercultural or sociological). The results of this study allowed us, on one hand, to suggest two work assessment scales for the two populations in Cambodia and France regarding stressful experiences and ethical-hierarchical conflicts. They allowed us, on the other hand, to better understand the two phenomena studied at two levels, intra and intercultural. These results are essentially the empirical basis for future comparative research projects in social psychology, particularly in Cambodia and France.
