Vietnamese mountain resorts: performance spaces for the urban Kinh middle class

On April 6, 2026, Emmanuelle PEYVEL, an associate research fellow at IRASEC, was invited to the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), at the Centre for Research on Territorial Development (CRDT), as part of the Mesopolis chair focusing on small and medium-sized cities in transformation, led by Pham Thi Thanh Hien. On this occasion, she presented part of her research on Vietnamese high-altitude resorts, more specifically in relation to tourist practices linked to matrimonial events.

The urban migration of young people in Laos is often driven by the dual motivations of escaping poverty and seeking a different way of life. Previous research has demonstrated that rural-urban migration brings with it a mix of economic opportunities and heightened sexual risks. However, less attention has been given to sedentary populations residing in areas with significant migratory activity. While migration is often viewed in terms of economic opportunities, it also brings vulnerabilities, particularly in regions of rapid development like Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

Launch of the book “L’Asie du Sud-Est 2026” in Kuala Lumpur

As part of the 26th edition of the Reflection Seminar, which will take place from Thursday, March 12 to Friday, March 13, 2026, in Kuala Lumpur, Jérémy Jammes will present the annual publication “L’Asie du Sud-Est 2026 - Bilan, Enjeux et perspectives”, and Elisabeth Peyroux will give a presentation on artificial intelligence entitled “Entre innovation et contrôle : les enjeux de l’IA urbaine à Singapour” [Between Innovation and Control : The Challenges of Urban AI in Singapore].
As in previous years, the meeting will be held behind closed doors and will be conducted mainly in French. The seminar will therefore not be open to the public.
